5 Questions with Sergio Moure
Varese sat down with composer, Sergio Moure, for our regular 5 Questions feature. His latest project for the soundtrack, Extinction, will release digitally on Aug 14th. A limited edition physical release is scheduled for later this year.
1. Describe the Extinction soundtrack.
From the beginning, after reading the script, I knew I had a very important task when dealing with the emotions. Extinction is a story that delves into the deepest feelings, and I as a composer must reflect that. I wanted to make an emotional soundtrack, but also with some epic and rhythmic moments typical for the genre.
2. This is the second time you have worked together with the director Miguel Angel Vivas. Did he give you any interesting instructions or feedback to help you create the tonal palate?
Yes, this is the second time I collaborate with Miguel, and is a real treat. He is is a director who leaves you a lot of creative freedom, but at the same time he knows what to tell the composer to show him the way to find the right emotional tone. He asked me to focus on the emotional aspects of the story and the relationship between the characters, without leaving aside the idea that it has to be a genre score.
3. Which scene did you score first and why?
It was the prologue, a 10 minutes scene that combines really well the emotional and horror aspects of the film. I could develop over the scene the emotional tone that will permeate the rest of the score.
4. What is your favorite Varese Sarabande album title that you own?
It is very difficult to choose one among so many wonderful albums but one of my favorites is "Proof" by Stephen Warbeck.
5. What kind of ensemble did you use to record the score? Did you use any interesting or unusual instrumentation or soloists that you would like to mention?
I used a classical symphony ensemble, specifically the Cordoba Symphony Orchestra, which I think did an incredible job. I also used a prepared piano and several kinds of guitars.

1.Describe la banda sonora de Extinción.
Desde el principio, tras leer el guión, supe que tenía frente a mí una labor muy importante a la hora de trabajar las emociones. Extinction es una historia que profundiza en los sentimientos mas profundos, y yo como compositor lo debía de reflejar. Quise hacer una banda sonora emotiva , pero a la vez con momentos épicos y rítmicos como corresponde al género.
2. Esta es la segunda vez que has trabajado con Miguel. Te dio alguna indicación interesante o comentario para ayudarte a encontrar el sonido adecuado?
Si, esta es la segunda vez que colaboro con Miguel Angel, y es un verdadero placer, ya que es un director que te deja mucha libertad creativa, pero al mismo tiempo sabe indicar claramente al compositor el camino por el que ir para obtener el tono emocional adecuado. Me pidió que incidiera en la parte emocional especialmente y de la relación entre si de los personajes, sin dejar a un lado la idea de que debía de ser una banda sonora de género.
3 Cual fue la primera escena para la que escribiste música y por qué?
Fue la escena del prólogo, que con una duración de 10 minutos, combina muy bien los aspectos emotivos y de cine de terror. Pude desarrollar sobre ella el tono emocional que impregnará el resto de la banda sonora.
4 Cuál es tu disco favorito de los Varese Sarabande que tienes?
Es muy difícil elegir uno de tantos discos maravillosos, pero uno de mis favoritos es “Proof”, de Stephen Warbeck.
5. Qué clase de grupo musical usaste para grabar este trabajo? Has utilizado alguna instrumentación o solistas inusuales que te gustaría mencionar?
Utilicé una plantilla Sinfónica clásica, en concreto fue la Orquesta Sinfónica de Córdoba, que pienso hizo un trabajo de interpretación increíble. También utilice piano preparado y guitarras de varios tipos.
