About

Even though they never get their due from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame or critics, instrumental bands were a prime component powering the rock and roll engine during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Johnny & the Hurricanes were among the hottest and most successful instrumental outfits of all. Formed in 1957 in Toledo, Ohio by saxophonist Johnny Paris, they debuted in 1959 with the sizzling hit “Crossfire” and broke into the pop top five later that year with the relentless “Red River Rock.” Johnny’s gale-force sax was answered by guitarist Dave Yorko and organist Paul Telsuk on their hits “Reveille Rock,” “Beatnik Fly” and “Rocking Goose.”
