This title is now sold out. Music Composed and Conducted by Alfred Newman To celebrate the holidays and also to conclude Varèse Sarabande’s own 25th anniversary year in high style comes this spectacular 50th anniversary deluxe edition of one of film music’s greatest masterpieces. Released in 1953, Twentieth Century-Fox’s The Robe starred Richard Burton, Jean Simmons and Victor Mature in the first CinemaScope production. It was an enormous success and is a genuine film classic. Produced using the same lavish standards of excess and grandeur as our release of Alex North’s monumental Cleopatra, Alfred Newman’s The Robe finally emerges in its ultimate incarnation. Newly remixed and mastered from the original film elements (a source never used for any previous release), The Robe sounds better than ever, contains more music than ever before and embodies, for the first time, the true epic scope of what is, most certainly, one of Newman greatest musical achievements. By late August 1953, the recording sessions for The Robe were finished. The music was mixed and dubbed, forever locked into the composite tracks of the picture along with the dialogue and sound effects. After the film had opened successfully, Newman reassembled his orchestra to record new mono versions of selections from his score for release as a soundtrack album. All of the reels of film that contained his original recordings for The Robe were broken down and placed in more than eighty boxes. Then they were removed from the dubbing stage and transferred to a vault on the top floor of the editorial building, where they were stored in random stacks. There they sat, among many other cans and boxes of Twentieth Century-Fox’s musical memories--gathering dust and happily undisturbed--for more than forty years. It has been a long road for this historic release to become a reality. The details of the story behind its release and the glory of the music itself are only to be found in the marvelous production that makes for this very special deluxe edition.
