It must have been somewhat difficult convincing Twentieth Century Fox that a story about a sweet chimp being removed from his loving trainer and being shipped to a secret military base to participate in radiation-effect experiments could be a fun film for all the family, and yet, curiously, the finished article manages to unify widely disparate elements and almost coheres them into a satisfying whole. Undaunted by the maxim to never work with children or animals, director Jonathan Kaplan handles a veritable barrel of monkeys with aplomb � and even deftly renders subtly different personalities from the gibbering group.
