“Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu follows up on his critically acclaimed, Oscar-nominated Amores Perros with the English-language film 21 Grams, a stunning virtuoso performance by director, cast and crew. “This movie knocks you out with an astonishing blend of hyper-realism, visual complexity and powerful themes.”
– The Hollywood Reporter

Whether you fear death or not, it comes, and at that moment your body becomes twenty-one grams lighter. Is it a person’s soul that constitutes those twenty-one grams? Is that the weight carried by those who survive us? 21 GRAMS explores the emotionally and physically charged existences of three characters: Cristina (Naomi Watts), Paul (Sean Penn) and Jack (Benicio Del Toro). Initially, not even acquainted, the trio and their destinies become irrevocably intertwined in a fusion of love, redemption and obsession.

College professor Paul Rivers and his wife Mary find their union precariously balanced between life and death. He is mortally ill and awaiting a heart transplant, while she hopes to become pregnant with his child through artificial insemination. Cristina Peck, having matured since her reckless past, is a good wife to Michael (Danny Huston) and loving mother to two little girls. Her family radiates hope and joy. Much farther down the socioeconomic scale, ex-com Jack Jordan and his wife struggle to provide for their two children while Jack reaffirms his commitment to religion.

A tragic accident that claims several lives places these couples in each other’s orbit. It is a story of hope and humanity, of resilience and survival.

The mesmerizing and edgy blues score by Gustavo Santaolalla provides a haunting undercurrent to the severe drama that unfolds. In 1967, he founded the legendary Arco Iris, the Argentine band that pioneered the fusion of rock and Latin American folk. Santaolalla is the winner of four Latin Grammy Awards.

21 GRAMS won rave reviews at both the Toronto and Venice film festivals and is expected to be a strong Oscar contender in many categories. Focus Features opens 21 GRAMS in New York and LA on November 21, before a nationwide rollout over the coming weeks.
