The Freeling family has settled into a new home, following the annihilation of their Cuesta Verde residence by terrifying visitors from the netherworld. But the spirits of the dead are still determined to get at the Freeling’s clairvoyant daughter Carol Anne. Unable to reach her this time through the family television, they make contact with her through her toy phone. Enter Kane, a demon in the disguise of a preacher. Played with extraordinary hypnotic malevolence by the late avant-garde theatrical luminary Julian Beck. Kane tries to cajole Carol Anne to “the other side.” When his cunning fails, he unleashes the hellish fury of the Poltergeist on the Freelings. They turn for help to a mysterious medicine man (Will Sampson as Taylor), a medium (Zelda Rubinstein as Tangena), and most of all, to each other. Jerry Goldsmith’s score for the original POLTERGEIST (1982) was a masterpiece on the level of his own Academy Award-winning score for THE OMEN (1976). Revisiting and expanding upon his themes from the first score, Goldsmith adds a tremendous amount of new material. His score for POLTERGEIST II is an epic work for choir and orchestra.
