After Poco he joined Rick Nelson’s Stone Canyon Band. A stint as a session bassist in Linda Ronstadt’s band with Don Henley and Glen Frey followed. When Bernie Leadon quit the disintegrating Flying Burrito Brothers the three joined up with Randy as The Eagles. He continued as a prominent member of the band through Hotel California, writing many of their hits. Billy Swan, Elvis Presley’s former bassist was very impressed with Billy’s song “Lover Please,” pushing it to people until it was picked up by former Drifter Clyde McPhatter to become a national smash. Billy became a Nashville producer, gaining plaudits right away on his work with Tony Joe White. Later he became part of Kris Kristofferson’s touring band for a couple of years, and encouraged a few mavericks like Kinky Friedman along the way. Returning to Nashville, Billy recorded his debut solo album, a good-natured groovin’ country-soul project which gave birth to the monster hit “I Can Help,” the lazy Memphis- sub-rockabilly groove which became one of the biggest and best loved, albeit most unlikely, hits of the ’70s. Charlie Rich Jr. started out in the mid-70s as part of the scene which also brought us John Prine, and made a couple of critically acclaimed albums for Epic. His next gig was as his father’s bandleader just as “The Silver Fox” was becoming a country superstar. In addition to the continuous touring, Charlie Jr. wrote a number of songs on his father’s hit albums, and continued to be prominent in singer/songwriter circles. A move to California saw him exploring other areas...the emerging field of computer animation, as well as getting into the field of arranging and production, (working with the likes of Smokey Robinson and Freddy Fender) and becoming somewhat of a cult favorite as a performer. |
