Dawn Orson Welles came to California from New York in 1940 to direct his first film. He brought with him composer Bernard Herrmann to score what would also be his first film. Film and film music have never been the same. Herrmann was known to have grumbled in an interview once. “My first film was Citizen Kane and it’s been downhill ever since.” While Herrmann’s filmography would go on to include such classics as The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, Vertigo, Psycho, North by Northwest, Taxi Driver and many more justifiable classics his comment is, if not accurate, certainly characteristic of him. Perhaps only Alex North with his A Streetcar Named Desire score made such a striking impact as Herrmann did with his brilliant score. Here Joel McNeely adds another masterpiece recording to his historic recording series featuring some of Herrmann’s most remarkable work. Grammy winning soprano Janice Watson sings the show-stopping aria Salaambo for this recording of the complete Citizen Kane.Citizen Kane was recently name as the greatest film of all time by the American Film Institute. CD cover features an original painting by Matthew Joseph Peak. Catalog # 302 065 806 2 Release date 11/9/99 |
